How shipping industry set sails to reduce carbon footprint with AI?

I thought over-consumption drives heavily towards carbon footprint. While that's accusation might be true, there is something else that ship owners can do to reduce carbon footprints from their business. They can achieve that with AI technology!

Ever wonder how shipping industry set sail to reduce carbon emission?

It is not as simple as 'the lesser goods they carry, the lesser ships sail' - that's unthinkable as demands towards goods increases as global population is getting bigger.

For every item we purchase, it carries 20-30% percentage of shipping cost, depending on the nature of the item and from where it is imported.

There are many ways ship owners can strategize themselves to reduce carbon footprints. This includes transition to low carbon fuels like LNG, adopt renewable energy sources and implement slow steaming.

On eve of Eid, I found myself randomly watched CNA, covering how AI makes impact to shipping industry in reducing carbon footprints. Adopting AI as backbone of shipping data analytics can be one of the strategies that ship owners can adopt.

Excessive carbon footprints are produced due to below challenges that faced by shipping industry players:

  • Unoptimized delivery schedule that leads ship to still on water, arrive early or late at port.

  • Unoptimized delivery schedule may stemmed from unpredictable weather and sea route condition.

  • High reliance to captain's instinct from his vast experience in determining ship's speed, unbacked by data.

  • Condition of ship ie fouling.

Deepsea, an AI company for maritime steps in to solve above issue by providing AI-based insights & optimization. This includes providing real-time data and performance analysis to help ship owners make informed decisions that reducing fuel consumptions & emissions, making vessels more efficient for every goods they ship.

This, eventually reduced the carbon footprint from shipping.

This breakthrough caught my attention in the eve Eid as I witnessed the collaboration between something that is latest and advance, ie artificial intelligence with something that is so traditional, ie shipping industry. Shipping industry has been in this world since forever.

Deepsea clients reported significant reductions of their carbon footprint. On average, they achieved up to 20% reduction in emissions - that is equivalent of CO2 emissions by 4,000 cars in one year!

You can check in depth coverage by CNA in their Youtube channel by searching 'CNA Tech to Save the World'. At the time I'm writing, this topic has not uploaded yet in their channel.
